Sports
I started covering sports with a cross country beat, which pushed me out of my comfort zone to gain expertise in a specific sport for the first time. I furthered this writing in my coverage of the soccer team, but I didn't fully emerge as a sports writer until I took on a story that challenged both my news organizational skills and my limited knowledge of the collegiate sports recruitment process.
Committing during COVID
April 2021
Amid COVID-19 protocols influencing the sports recruitment process, I pursued a feature story about how these issues manifested at Clarke Central. I interviewed several coaches and athletes about their various experiences, and conducted thorough outside research to understand the decisions made by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and their ramifications. With so many different restrictions in play, it took in-depth outlining in order to communicate the issue concisely.

Kicking off the season
January 2021
For my boys varsity soccer beat, a news brief previewing a game or important event every 3 weeks, I wrote this preview for the team's first game of the season. I considered the many factors that impacted them as they got back on the field such as COVID-19 regulations, increased team energy and the adjustment the team is making after losing senior players last spring. Because soccer is an important part of CCHS, such quality and timely coverage is valuable to my school community.
Facing Eastside
March 2021
By my second beat about the boys soccer team, I had become more efficient and intentional in my reporting, focusing on the expectations for the game and the team's strategies for performing well. I began to understand the sport more and made my questions for the coach more specific.

CCHS soccer teams face Greenbrier High School
March 2021
A fellow staffer covered the girls varsity soccer game while I covered boys varsity when they faced off against the same school. While this game was later cancelled due to COVID, it further exemplifies my ability to consistently keep up with the soccer team and produce detailed coverage.

Running region
October 2019
For this story in particular, I wrote about how the team is preparing for their region meet and explored the details of the race. This was one of my more significant beats due to the nature of the meet. By getting it posted a week before the meet, I brought attention provided coverage while it was timely to our audience.
Running toward a 5k
August 2019
In my sophomore year, I covered the cross country team as my beat. These news briefs helped to ensure equal coverage of CCHS sports. This was my first sports story, and I wanted to make sure I asked all the right qestions. Through thoughtful planning, I came up with interview questions that gave me helpful responses from the coach.

Reaching the
finish line
November 2019
For this cross country news brief, I detailed the results from the team's region and state meets. Because the team had not received thorough coverage in the past from ODYSSEY, I became passionate about spreading the word about the team's wins with the rest of my school.
