Photojournalism

Exploring photojournalism allows me to utilize my creativity and experiment with different strategies to encompass a story in one frame. I  learn about my subjects' passions as I capture them in their environment, which motivates me to explore a variety of opportunities to broaden my skill set and meet new people to photograph.

UGA Parade

January 2022

At the University of Georgia National Championship Parade, I contributed to a photo gallery capturing the reaction, action, and police response to the parade. I took a mixture of wide and close shots, focusing on individuals as well as the group as a whole in order to convey the full story well.

Day of Jubilee

May 2021

Along with another photographer, I covered this vigil and libation ceremony in celebration of the Athens Day of Jubilee and to honor the enslaved people buried in unmarked graves beneath them. This was a sensitive event to photograph, and thus, I focused on conveying the emotion of the speakers and attendees. It was also a difficult shoot technically due to the rain, which challenged me to think on my feet on how to protect my camera and still try to get quality photos.

In his element

November 2019

I visited student rapper Jay Kelly at his house to capture photos of him in his recording area, surrounded by his equipment, motivational mementos and photos of his family. For my profile on him and his passion for making rap music, it was important to show him in his natural environment to give readers context for his story. I tried photographing him at different points in his production process and experimented with lighting, perspectives and composition.

Running
toward a 5k

April 2020

I took this photo of cross country practice for a news brief, and it took a lot of experimenting to get the right shots. But, after adjusting my angles and composition, I shot this picture that I was very proud of. It inspired me to take more photos and go the extra mile to include emotion and action in every one I shot, and explore more photography opportunities for sports coverage.

One of the few

February 2020

I took this photo of Fannie Sims Smith to include as the main visual in my “Echoes of integration” article. I planned a time that would have softer sunlight and took the picture from a variety of angles to ensure a quality photo. Selecting this portrait shot as the large feature photo for this story allows readers to put a face to the story of desegregating the school district -- a story that is very reliant on firsthand accounts of its sources.

Advocating for reform

February 2020

These photos of Imani Scott-Blackwell accompanied my magazine Q&A in which she was featured. I experimented with different compositions, backgrounds and lighting, and tried photographing her candid in addition to staged by capturing her while talking to me and laughing. I chose this emotion because while Scott-Blackwell is tackling hard-hitting and serious matters in her community, she maintains optimism and a positive demeanor.

JROTC Military Ball gallery

February 2019

I collaborated with Viewpoints Editor Maya Cornish on this photo gallery of the CCHS JROTC military ball. This was one of my first experiences attending an event to cover and taking photos for ODYSSEY, and it allowed me to practice composing photos well by including faces in my photos. I enjoyed getting to meet people that I hadn't before and capture their emotions.
